PAINTING OF LOCAL LANDMARK WINS PRIZE

A midnight painting of the W.A. Frost Bar at St. Paul's Selby and Western avenues won the top prize from "Four Corners and the Cathedral: A Study of Light and Place," a first-time summerlong arts celebration organized by the art gallery Local Color on Cathedral Hill.

Scott Gatty's view, just one of dozens produced in this year's "plein air" (open air) painting competition, will be on exhibit from Oct. 8 to Nov. 26 at the gallery in the lower level of the Blair Arcade building, 165 Western Ave.

Eleven artists set up on the sidewalks of a busy intersection to produce five worthy pieces that capture the light and space of Cathedral Hill.

During the past two months, 11 selected artists took to the sidewalks to paint scenes from the historic crossroads at different times of day. The beauty, said gallery partner Andrzej Zalasinski Jr., is to find the differences in each scene.

The public will get one more chance to see how art comes to life. To launch the exhibit, there will be a final outdoor painting session from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 8 on the four corners of the intersection. An awards ceremony and opening reception will follow from 6 to 9 p.m. at the gallery.
