(St. Paul MN / 29 September 2005) Local Color on Cathedral Hill announces the winners of the first annual "Four Corners & the Cathedral: a study of light and place." a summer-long celebration of the arts, inspired by the historic charm of the crossroads of Western & Selby Avenues in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The Best of Show 2005 Award goes to "Corner Bar 'Round Midnight" by Scott Gatty, an oil on panel, 16" X 20". Two Honorable Mentions go to pieces by Richard Abraham, "Sunday Service," an oil on linen, 10" X 12", and "Nina's," an oil on linen, 12" X 16". Other Honorable Mentions are awarded for "The Lights of the A-A Market" by Cheryl LeClair-Sommer, soft pastel, 9" X 12", and "After the Rain" by Jeanne Long, watercolor, 11" X 14".
Winning artist Scott Gatty says, "I moved back to the city of St. Paul this year from a ten-year hiatus in the suburbs. One result is, I get to experience more lighting at night, in particular, how the light affects buildings with character. What intrigued me about this scene was the harsh but warm light on the exterior of the building, which shows off the beautiful orange-red brick, framed at the top by the silhouette of a street tree's branches. This is in contrast to the subdued lighting of the interior world of a bar, late on a quiet Sunday night."
A final outdoor painting with the artists will be held on Saturday, October 8, from 12:00 to 4:00 PM on the four corners of Selby and Western, followed by the Awards Ceremony and Opening Reception from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Local Color on Cathedral Hill Gallery, 165 Western Avenue, in the lower level of Blair Arcade, St. Paul, Minn. Phone 651-227-7701, www.lcolor.com
The jury-selected works will remain on exhibition from October 8 to November 26, 2005, including the Fourth Annual "Art On The Town" Celebration. The exhibit includes the artworks of "Four Corners & The Cathedral" artists Richard Abraham, Jennifer Awes, Joshua Cunningham, Emily Haddad, Cheryl LeClair-Sommer, Jeanne Long, Shawn McCann, Dan McClelland, Jeffrey Smith and Patricia Voje.
From July through September, ten selected artists worked outdoors (plein-air) on these four corners creating a minimum of five artworks, capturing the light, color and ambiance of Cathedral Hill, working in two-dimensional applied media (oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, graphite, charcoal).
Throughout the eight weeks, Twin Cities audiences have had the opportunity to experience the entire process -- from creation to exhibition -- discovering even more local color in the Cathedral Hill community.
During the Fourth Annual "Art on the Town" celebration, more than eighty wide-ranging interpretations, traditional and modern, will be on exhibition and for sale. Admission is free.
